People in Rostock are athletic. There are more than 200 sports clubs in Rostock with over 45,000 active members, which adds up to one in five people in the city. A quarter of them play football, followed by general sports, swimming and diving, athletics, gymnastics, karate and, of course, sailing and windsurfing on the Baltic Sea and the Warnow River. A good 2,400 people in Rostock are members of 25 sports clubs for disabled people.

Rostock’s athletes are also active in high-performance sports such as football, handball, basketball, rowing, diving and triathlons. Rostock has a well-developed infrastructure for training and competitions, with a stadium, swimming pools, ice rinks, and indoor and outdoor training facilities.

Many clubs in Rostock have a national radius and an enthusiastic following of Rostock inhabitants and guests at their games. For example, F.C. Hansa Rostock football team (3rd League), which is particularly involved in training young talent at its youth academy, the Rostock Piranhas ice hockey team (Oberliga Nord), the HC Empor handball team (2nd Bundesliga), The Rostock Nasenbären inline hockey team (2nd Bundesliga, 2014 season) and the Rostocker Robben, who play in the German Beach Soccer League.

Rostock’s athletes have also enjoyed special success at European championships and the Olympic and Paralympic Games in athletics, rowing, sailing, short track, diving, finswimming and scuba diving, as well as triathlons. Rostock is the Olympic training centre of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with national youth training centres and facilities for rowing, sailing, short track and diving.

A yearly highlight for water sports in Rostock is the WARNEMÜNDE WEEK, which takes place in the first week of July every year at the seaside resort of Warnemünde. For nine days, almost 2,000 sailors from nearly 30 countries compete in contests such as European cups, International German Championships, Goldcups, the German Open and the Kitesurf Trophy. Around 650,000 visitors attend the spectacle in 2014.

Rostock is an athletically diverse city which, besides an excellent sailing and surfing area, has a wide range of sports venues, such as a football stadium, the athletics stadium and the Neptun indoor swimming pool, all of which are well equipped for training, competitions and events. Almost 70 sports halls and 3 swimming pools - the Neptune swimming pool alone attracts 300,000 visitors each year - an outdoor pool and many outdoor areas invite to sport and games. Many of these sports venues are maintained by the City of Rostock. Tennis courts, riding schools and a golf course provide further appealing opportunities for recreation. Furthermore, leisure and club cyclists cherish the well-developed cycling network in and around Rostock, such as the European Berlin-Copenhagen cycling route or the large coastal forest of Rostock Heath.

Sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand up paddling, rowing - Rostock is the perfect place for water sports enthusiasts. Located by the Baltic Sea and with the Warnow River flowing through the city, Rostock has excellent starting points for all water lovers. Some people even use the waves created by the numerous ferries to surf on.

In the summer, the ACTIVE BEACH WARNEMÜNDE, hosted by the Tourist Centre Rostock and Warnemünde, turns into a games and sports beach; visitors can enjoy active relaxation with beach soccer, beach volleyball and other types of sports on the fine, sandy beach at the seaside resort of Warnemünde. In an area of 7,500m², guests can use eight playing fields right by the Baltic Sea with first-class equipment and a qualified training team.
