Day trip destinations

Another exciting thing to do on holiday – in addition to spending time on the beach or by the Baltic – is going on excursions in the local area. Rostock and Warnemünde are conveniently located on the Baltic coast, meaning that you can easily get to lots of other destinations by bike or car, or even by boat. What’s more, there’s a wide variety of attractive day trips in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Everything is here, from the coast to the green inland and historical buildings in designs ranging from spa architecture to brick Gothic.

Castle tour today? Gelbensande, Güstrow and Schwerin

When you think of castles, it often evokes memories of magnificent, magical facades and romantic feelings. There are 3 castles in the area surrounding Rostock which can satisfy these wishes. The Jagdschloss Gelbensande hunting lodge in the Rostock Heath was once the summer residence of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III and his wife Anastasia Mikhailovna Romanova. You can go to an exhibition here, and you can also visit the exhibition spaces in the Güstrow and Schwerin castles. The magical structure in Schwerin with its castle towers was built in the romantic historicism style. Today, it is the seat of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The former residential castle of Güstrow still retains its renaissance style.

Discover the flair of the Hansa City: Wismar and Stralsund

You can also discover representative buildings in the Hansa flair cities of the Mecklenburg Baltic coast. Impressive north German brick Gothic churches, merchant’s houses and storehouses – all this characterises Stralsund and Wismar. The listed medieval architecture has been so well preserved that the old towns of Stralsund and Wismar are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The flair of the Hansa City of Stralsund is thought of as the gateway to the island of Rügen, Germany’s largest island.

Day trips to Baltic resorts: Boltenhagen, Kühlungsborn and Graal-Müritz

You can get to Kühlungsborn, the largest German Baltic resort, by boat from Warnemünde. The same goes for the seaside health resort of Graal-Müritz. Exciting at Kühlungsborn: the large city forest in the middle of the city, the pier and the historic light railway called Molli. The seaside health resort of Boltenhagen is near the Wismar bay and provides a modern marina thanks to the Weiße Wiek.

Lagoon Area National Park: Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula

The 45 kilometre-long peninsula of Fischland-Darß-Zingst has the luck to be simultaneously surrounded by the Baltic and a lagoon. In addition to the Baltic resorts of Wustrow, Ahrenshoop, Prerow, Zingst and others, nature is among the attractions here: the wild western beach, the nearby Hiddensee island, the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park, where you can observe cranes while on holiday.
