History of Shipbuilding

The focus of this exhibition is on shipbuilding in the GDR and manufacturing processes at a large wharf, from the construction to the handover of a ship. History of the Deutsche Seereederei shipping company in Rostock

Merchant shipping in the GDR began with the very old steamer ‘VORWÄRTS’ in 1950. The exhibition highlights the development of Deustche Seereederei, which was founded in 1952 and privatised in 1993.

Passenger shipping in the GDR

In 1960, the VÖLKERFREUNDSCHAFT became the first passenger ship to be launched in the GDR. In this exhibition you can find out under what conditions GDR citizens were allowed to go on popular trips abroad. The history of both subsequent holiday ships, FRITZ HECKERT and ARKONA, is also mentioned.

History of maritime radio

This exhibition provides information about various things, from sending messages via drums to Morse code, radio and modern satellite navigation. You can see how the original radio rooms looked in 1960 and 1980.

Future-orientated technology in shipping and shipbuilding

This exhibition focuses on technological ways of equipping ships with energy-efficient motor systems.

History of the ports in Rostock, Wismar and Stralsund to the modern day

The most important ports in the GDR were in Rostock, Wismar and Stralsund. Here, the development of these ports from the Middle Ages to their modern functions as trans-shipment points in the 21st century is explained.

History of the traditional ship and the Type IV ships

Between 1954 and 1961, fifteen 10,000-tonne cargo ships were built at the Warnow wharf in Warnemünde. This exhibition explains why this type of ship is so special and displays a picture of the lives of the sailors on board the cargo ships, one of which (DRESDEN) has been preserved as a museum ship.

Deep-sea fishing in Rostock

Rostock was the location of a fishing fleet and a fish processing industry. The ‘Fischkombinat’ in Rostock, its structure and the history of the Marienehe fishing harbour are the focus of this exhibition.

Offshore Infocenter Rostock
