As a popular city for students, Rostock constantly attracts a great deal of new impulses and creative ideas. This is also apparent to the young people who choose the city as their next point of berth. Science and research, leisure and friends, the city offers a whole lot to students who choose its shore as the place to spend this exciting chapter in their lives.
Traditio et Innovatio
In 2019, the university celebrated the 600th anniversary of its founding and is the oldest university in the Baltic region. Today, there are nine faculties and an interdisciplinary group which is currently offering more than 170 courses for 14,000 students. “Traditio et Innovatio” is the university’s motto – discover traditions and strike off for pastures new.
The university has cultivated close collaboration with extramural research institutions such as the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research and the MSC Robben research centre, which hold lectures for students.
Sun, beach & surfing
But student life does not just consist of studying – after lectures, it is off to the beach! Warnemünde means beaches, surfing, kite surfing, stand-up-paddling and chilled sunsets by the sea. In the young surfer scene, you can make contacts quickly on your course or at the beach bar. With sand between your toes and the sun on your skin, even cramming for your next exam can be fun.
You’ll find urban variety in KTV, the trendy bar district where you can always experience and discover something new – from morning to evening and back again. That includes neighbourhood cafés, music and bustling places such as Am Brink and Margaretenplatz. Rostock’s creative scene has something to offer: colourful graffiti displaying a love for Rostock, design markets for fans of DIY, a circus with audience participation, and a film festival. You can have a barbecue and chill on the waterfront in the port. Popular for its night-time-friendly climate, it makes the rhythm in Rostock perfect.
Rostock is even doing well when it comes to student clubs. Whether it’s the Theater des Friedens, the Studentenkeller, the LT club, the ST club, the Peter-Weiß-Haus, the Bunker, the Stadtpalast, the Zwischenbau or the M.A.U. – they’ve all seen dances and celebrations from different generations, and enjoy cult status amongst their clientele due to their legendary parties.
The rapper Marteria loves performing songs in his hometown as well as about it – both in small clubs and on huge stadium stages. He and other nationally and internationally famous acts such as Rammstein and a-ha regularly take to the stage in the IGA Park, the StadtHalle, the HanseMesse, the Moya, the M.A.U. and in the Ostseestadion.
