Journey to Rostock and Warnemünde

The Hanseatic City of Rostock is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is located on the axes Berlin – Copenhagen, Hamburg – Szczecin and is accessible via the motorways A19 and A20, Rostock airport as well as express trains and ferry connections via the Baltic Sea.

The well-developed highways A19 and A20 as well as roads along enchanting landscapes lead directly to Rostock. The Warnowtunnel offers the shortest way across the Warnow (toll). There are many direct and fast connections starting all around Germany to get to Rostock by long-distance trains (ICE or IC connections from Deutsche Bahn).

The Hanseatic City is also easily accessible from the high sea. Use the ferries to and from Scandinavia. The ferries from the ports of Gedser (Denmark) and Trelleborg (Sweden) run several times a day. Fly straight to the beach! The Rostock-Laage airport is located in the south of Rostock, next to the A19. From here, there are direct connections to Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart (Germanwings), Munich (Lufthansa).

The Hanseatic City of Rostock is located directly in the hub between the metropolises Berlin, Hamburg, Copenhagen and Szczecin. The motorways A19 and A20 meet here. The A19, a part of the European route E 55, links the Hanseatic City with metropolises throughout Europe, from Sweden to Greece. The A20 motorway forms the link from Schleswig-Holstein to Szczecin.

Occasional traffic restrictions on the A19 motorway

Current information for arriving by car:

Occasional impairments of traffic on the route between the motorway junction Wittstock and Rostock can arise due to the construction of a new bridge on the A19 motorway (junction Waren/Müritz). Moreover, transit on this section is closed for vehicles with a width of over 2.10 metres (planned completion of construction work: 2018).

Depending on the destination, the following alternative routes are recommended in order to bypass the construction site for the journey to the Baltic coast:

From the direction of Hamburg:

  • Via the A1 motorway in the direction of Lübeck, and from there on the A20 motorway towards the coast or your holiday destination
  • Via A24 motorway to the Schwerin junction, further on the A14 motorway in the direction of Wismar, and from there on the A20 motorway towards the coast or your holiday destination

From the direction of Berlin:

  • Via the A10 motorway westwards towards the Berliner Ring, further on the A11 motorway in the direction of Stettin, and from there on the A20 motorway towards the coast or your holiday destination
  • Via the A10 motorway westwards towards the Berliner Ring, further on the A24 motorway to the Schwerin junction, further on the A14 motorway in the direction of Wismar, and from there on the A20 motorway towards the coast or your holiday destination
