Heiligendamm, now a part of Bad Doberan, is the oldest seaside resort in Germany and was founded in 1793 by Friedrich Franz I, the Duke of Mecklenburg/Schwerin.
This “white town by the sea” is shaped by its classical buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The opening of the Kempinski grand Hotel in 2003 contributed significantly to the “rebirth” of the most exclusive seaside health spa in the country.
In summer 2007, the G8 Summit took place here, with the heads of the most powerful industrial nations in the world.
