Abbeys in Rostock
Rostock Cultural History Museum is located in the historic Abbey of the Holy Cross, which is one of the best preserved abbeys in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The ‘Abbeys in Rostock’ exhibition presents the history of the four Middle Age abbeys in the city of Rostock.
Religious art
The historic refectory from 1480 is one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings on the German Baltic Sea coast. It houses a collection of Middle Age art from Rostock’s abbeys and some of the precious treasure from the Abbey of the Holy Cross.
Dutch art
There is an outstanding collection of Dutch art from the 16th and 19th centuries at Rostock Cultural History Museum. The extensive range of paintings by names such as Jan Breughel, Rachel Ruysch and Willem Kallf supplement a large collection of pictures including works by Rembrandt and van Dyck.
Rostock cityscapes
Pictures from artists such as Georg Friedrich Kersting, Ludwig Hornemann and others show not only a panorama of the city by the Warnow River, distinguished by four large churches; they also show the significance of the area and how the city image changed from the early 19th century to the 20th century.
Ostracised modernity
With the portfolio of Bernhard A. Böhmer, the museum has the last completely preserved collection from the ‘degenerate art’ campaign carried out by the National Socialists in 1937. This exhibition demonstrates the brutal cultural policies of the National Socialists and the outlawing of artwork and artists, which is one of the darkest periods of German history.
Art in Mecklenburg
A view of artwork in Mecklenburg during the first half of the 20th century shows an artistic landscape that is far from the art centres but still impressive and diverse.
Toys
Model railways, dolls and dollhouses, theatre, children’s books, building sets and many more objects provide an insight into the world of children’s toys, particularly among the upper classes, over the past two centuries.
Coins
At the centre of the permanent exhibition are objects from the rich collections of coins from Rostock and Mecklenburg. This exhibition provides an extensive overview of Rostock’s coin and money history from the beginnings to the 19th century.
Arts and crafts
The handcrafted collections contain around 35,000 objects. The extensive and precious collection contains objects made of tin and silver,
ceramic objects and watches, as well as historic jewellery. Dating from the 15th to the beginning of the 20th century, these items document the development of arts and crafts.
Archaeology
The exhibition in the western cloister of the Abbey of the Holy Cross presents a selection of dinnerware from Rostock, taken from one of the largest archaeological collections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
