The Rostock Christmas Market is once again opening its gates: 30 fairground rides, 35,000 cups of mulled wine and over one million lights also await 1 to 1.5 million visitors again this year. With features such as a Gourmet Mile, Christmas Fun Fair, Christmas Stage Magic, Fairy Tale Forest, Historical Christmas Market and Artisan Market, the Christmas Market organised by the municipal association Großmarkt Rostock provides highlights for the whole family and creates anticipation for Christmas.

Fairy Tale Castle Stage
Fairy tales for big and little children
Lots of Christmas Stage Magic awaits visitors who come to see the Fairy Tale Castle Stage at the New Market. From Tuesday to Friday, Father Christmas will be welcoming his little and big visitors for a chat Rostock kindergarten groups will present their stage programme on the talent stage. The staging of the Christmas fairy tales will take place every Saturday and Sunday at 4 pm.
All creative Christmas Market visitors are once again welcomed to visit the Christmas workshop in the forecourt at the Kröpelin Gate. Painting, handicrafts and baking are among the featured activities. The Christmas workshop is open from Tuesday to Saturday in the afternoon hours. Visitors can listen to Christmas tales in a leisurely setting on Fridays and Saturdays.
A visit to our Fairy Tale World in the forecourt at the Kröpelin Gate is a must for our little guests. The familiar figures of the Fairy Tale Forest can be found between festively adorned snack stands. Let yourself to be enchanted and taken away into the world of fairy tales.
Handicrafts, art and design
Artisan craftwork and local creative minds
Anyone who is looking for something individual should definitely not miss out on the “REMTERzwo15”. The Artisan Market featuring 37 participants will be held on 4 to 6 December from 10 am to 6 pm in the foyer of the Town Hall. RemterZwo15 opens at 12 noon on 6 December. A large selection of handicrafts, art and design in high quality awaits visitors. An individual Christmas gift can certainly be found here.
The “Local Heroes Market” on the grounds of the starry canopy is new this year. Young Rostock enterprises from the art, culture and creative industry, clubs and local representatives from the street food scene will be presenting their lovingly made products on the weekend as well as during the week. Another highlight is the performance by the Rostock Community Theatre on 1 December at 6.30 pm. The Christmas Theatre will be transformed into a theatre stage for the first time. In cooperation with the Community Theatre, visitors can look forward to a one-man production of “Die Sternstunde des Josef Bieder” (“Josef Bieder’s Moment of Glory”).
Christmas Fun Fair
Thrills, speed and a hefty portion of fun await visitors to the Rostock Christmas Market at the Christmas Fun Fair spectacle held at the Fischerbastion (“Fisherman’s Bastion”). Passengers can choose between a family-suitable 120 degree swing ride or a spectacular 360 degree looping ride in the high fairground ride “THE BEAST”. In the “AROUND THE WORLD”, a very special giant swing ride, passengers can view the Christmas Market from above at a dizzy height of 60 metres. The “PETERSBURGER SCHLITTENFAHRT” (“St. Petersburg Sleigh Ride”) will also lure passengers to enjoy a fast tour in sleigh gondolas which also tilt nearly 90 degrees during the circular ride. “FREDDY’S CIRCUS” is just the right place for those who like to laugh.
Four stages of fun, action and enjoyment promise guaranteed fun for the whole family. A ride into the unknown, replete with horror effects and surprises, await visitors in the “HAUNTED CASTLE”. Of course, fun fair classics such as auto scooters, children’s carousels, raffles, ball throwing and fishing for ducks are also featured. The 38 metre-high Ferris wheel at the New Market is a special attraction in the evening hours. A ride with the whole family is absolutely recommended.
Singing Christmas carols
“Singing Christmas carols” is a special attraction on 20 December. Rostock choirs with about 450 participants at the Kröpelin Gate invite passers-by and visitors to the Rostock Christmas Market to sing Christmas carols together.
Going for a stroll, feasting and buying gifts
Oven-fresh pretzels, grilled Thuringian sausages, reindeer ham from Finland, apple punch, doughnuts, almonds, chestnuts and the popular Swedish punch “Glögg” invite visitors to indulge and linger at the Gourmet Mile on Kröpeliner Straße. Around 95 culinary stands featuring sweet and savoury delicacies will lure visitors this year.
Market dealers from Finland, Poland, Sweden, Great Britain and the Netherlands are represented on the approx. 3.2 kilometre long promenade. Whether it is traditional artisan craftwork, souvenirs or tasty specialities, there are many things to be discovered and admired at the stands, which are decorated for Christmas. Swedish chocolates and marzipan, Leipzig “Christmas stars” and holiday lights, hand-baked Finnish Christmas biscuits and Oriental lamps are among the latest features in 2015.
At the Historical Christmas Market held in the convent courtyard of the Abbey of the Holy Cross, about 30 artisans, merchants and jesters at over 20 market stands invite visitors to enjoy the atmosphere. Wool spinners, carpenters, wood carvers, candle makers, potters, bakers, innkeepers, belt makers or jewellery designers will depict everyday life and traditions in the medieval period. Storytellers await children with exciting stories. Medieval music, fire pits and glazing torches create a unique atmosphere. Axe throwing, fire shows and archery are just a few events which lure numerous visitors.
The small, but fine Christmas village “Am Brink” featuring cosy seating, tasty mulled wine and swinging grill delicacies has evolved into a real insider’s tip in recent years.
