Rostock University

History and development of the University of Rostock

The University of Rostock is the oldest university in the Baltic Sea region and is one of the German universities with the most tradition. With around 15,000 students, it is currently the largest university in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It was founded in 1419 under the name Alma Mater Rostochiensis. Looking at the founding year, it is clear that Rostock will expect a double centenary in 2019, as the 800-year anniversary of the city coincides with the 600-year anniversary of the University of Rostock. The heyday of the college began in 1563, after the rulers and the City of Rostock negotiated equal status regarding the patronage of the establishment. From the middle of the 17th century, the university became less important. The causes of this were war, a large fire in the city and the collapse of the Hanseatic League. It was only in the 19th century that the university began to recover. During the 20th century, many new buildings and institutes were created, for example in the fields of agriculture and technology. Constant efforts to modernise since the fall of the Berlin Wall have led to the university and its four campuses being a popular place to study for young people from all over the world. In 2000, the first comprehensive WLAN network in Europe was installed.

Comprehensive and modern range of courses

Whether you are interested in natural science, law or humanities, with 70 degree courses in nine faculties, there is an extremely extensive range at Rostock University. As well as bachelor and master’s courses, it is also possible to obtain a diploma in many subject fields. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Marine Technology offers disciplines such as biomedical technology. Since the beginning of 2014, this faculty has had an endowed chair for wind energy technology. Degree courses in medicine, dentistry and medical biotechnology can be found at the Faculty of Medicine. Young people interested in natural sciences can complete their studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, where they can study biological sciences, chemistry, mathematics or physics. At the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, students can obtain their bachelor’s degree in agricultural science and specialise afterwards in selected fields during their master’s course. At the Faculty of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, you can also study IT with certification as a teacher. The Theological Faculty offers a master’s course in evangelical theology and a teaching course in this field. Furthermore, there is also a faculty for economic and social sciences, a faculty of law and a faculty for philosophy, culture and languages. In addition, the language centre offers different foreign language courses for all students every semester.

Universitätsplatz Rostock

Appealing place to study by the Baltic Sea

As well as a wide range of courses, the University of Rostock is an important centre for research. For example, there is an interdisciplinary faculty where you can devote yourself to working on complex fields of research spanning all subjects. The university is one of the most founder-friendly colleges in Germany and is involved in many scientific projects. Here, there is a research body for the preparation of an archive of the works of writer Uwe Johnson. There are also further training opportunities at the college. The KOSMOS Project, amongst others, has opportunities for people with different educational and professional backgrounds. The BAAL Project deals with assistance systems that enable a self-determined lifestyle at an old age, and appeals to professionals from the fields of care and medicine. The rector, Wolfgang Schareck, was named ‘Rector of the Year’ in 2010, receiving the highest distinction from the German Association of University Professors and Lecturers. The new buildings on the ‘Südstadt’ campus provide the best conditions for research and teaching. Its laboratories are protected against vibrations and radiation. The library has a large collection of study and research material, much of which is digital. Last but not least, its location in Rostock by the Baltic Sea makes it an appealing place to study.
