Ferries in Rostock - The gateway to northern and eastern europe

Rostock is not only a starting point for eventful cruises to Northern Europe or on the Baltic Sea, but also an important ferry harbour. Up to 17 crossings daily bring passengers and vehicles to Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Whether you are travelling as a family, in a group or as a couple – thanks to the well-developed connections you can take unforgettable day excursions or short trips from Rostock to Scandinavia. But the voyage is often the prelude to an extended holiday in Northern Europe, for example in Norway.

By ferry from Rostock to Scandinavia

The shipping companies Stena Line and TTLine offer several daily connections to Trelleborg, the southernmost town in Sweden. Anyone who would like to give away as little precious holiday time as possible takes the night ferry. During your stroll through Trelleborg, which incidentally has one of the largest cargo ports in Sweden, you can reach the old Market Square as well as the remnants of a partially reconstructed Viking castle that is over 1,000 years old. But many travellers also ride further by bus to Malmö or via the Öresund Bridge to the Danish capital Copenhagen, which is about a two-hour drive away. In the meantime, ferries operated by Scandlines link Rostock with Gedser in southern Denmark. This lively harbour town features a lighthouse from which you can enjoy a view of the northern German coast in good weather. In addition, 25 kilometres of beautiful sand beach attract visitors. You can also take a side trip to Finland and Helsinki with the ships from Finnlines. Helsinki – Finland’s undisputed economic and cultural centre – is a lovely major city of manageable dimensions. You should not miss out on a visit to the largest sea fortress in Scandinavia: here you will find the UNESCO World Heritage site Suomenlinna, which is located directly at the harbour. Also worth seeing is the Uspenski Cathedral, the largest Orthodox church outside of Russia. But perhaps you will also have only a stopover in Helsinki, in order to travel further by ship to Saint Petersburg or the Estonian capital Tallinn. You can also reach Stockholm overnight by ship!
